Neil J. George
President

As the chief executive officer of Webster University, Dr. George oversees an international network of more than 100 campuses and 20,000 students across the United States, Europe and Asia. During his academic leadership the University has grown dramatically, more than doubling its enrollment and network of campuses, increasing international education opportunities and developing numerous onsite corporate programs and partnerships. In addition, the University has advanced the integration of academic technology into the teaching and learning work of the University, and has advanced the development of online programs.

Dr. George’s education background includes earning a bachelor of arts degree in government from King’s College, a master of arts in international relations from Georgetown University, and his doctorate in political science from Case Western Reserve University as well as completing postdoctoral studies at Harvard University’s Institute for Education Management. He has taught at King’s College and the State University of New York at Geneseo. Joining Webster University’s faculty in 1972, he quickly rose through the ranks, serving as Chair of the History-Political Science Department, Chair of Faculty, Dean of the Undergraduate College and University Academic Dean prior to being named Executive Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. George was named interim president of Webster University in 2008.

Dr. George’s academic and professional distinctions include service on the Board of Trustees of the World Affairs Council, St. Louis, and the Webster Groves/Shrewsbury Chamber of Commerce, as well as having served as president of a number of organizations including the National Association of Institutions for Military Education Services, the Missouri Political Science Association, the International Education Consortium of greater St. Louis, and the Council of Independent Colleges Chief Academic Officers Task Force.

Karen Luebbert
Vice President and Executive Assistant to the President

Responsiblities: The Office of Public Affairs, Institutional Research, Special Events, Affirmative Action and legal affairs. She also serves as the University’s liaison with the allied arts agencies located on the Webster Groves campus. Luebbert joined Webster University in 1967 as Director of the Library. She has served in a variety of administrative positions at the University, including Director of the Library for 25 years, Vice President of University Services and Vice President for Finance (Interim). She received her undergraduate degree from Webster University, the master of science in library science from Case Western Reserve University and her doctorate from St. Louis University. Luebbert currently serves as chair of Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club. She also serves on the boards of the Diversity Awareness Partnership, the Higher Education Center of St. Louis and the Jefferson National Parks Association.

Deborah Dey
Vice President for Students and Enrollment Management

Responsibilities: The Registrar’s office, admissions, financial aid, marketing and student affairs. Dey has been with Webster University since 1978, beginning her career as an assistant professor in the science department. She has held a variety of University positions, including Assistant Vice President of Academic Advising. Dey received her doctorate in American Studies from St. Louis University. She is currently a cabinet member of the Women’s Leadership Initiative of the United Way and serves as a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, MS 150 and Dress for Success.

David A. Garafola
Vice President for Finance and Administration

Responsibilities: Serves as the chief financial and business officer at Webster University. He directs the functional areas of finance and general accounting, resource planning and budget, endowment administration, human resources, administrative services and facilities planning and management. Garafola joined Webster University in 1998 and has held positions in higher education for several years, including at Towson University and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. He received a bachelor of science in business administration from Salisbury State University and a master of business administration from the University of Baltimore. Garafola is a member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), an EACUBO representative, served on accreditation visitation for the Middle States Association and is currently an active member participating with the Higher Learning Commission.

Lawrence Haffner
Vice President for Information Technology

Responsibilities: All aspects of technology across the University’s more than 100 domestic and international sites. This includes responsibility for administrative information systems, networking and technical services and architecture, desktop support, instructional lab support, media center operations, technology help desk and training and instructional support for teaching and learning. Haffner joined Webster University six years ago as its first CIO and has held positions in higher education technology over the past three decades. He has served in a variety of academic and administrative staff positions across seven different institutions, including previous CIO positions at Fairmont State University and McKendree University. Haffner has also taught both sociology and computer science at a number of institutions. A research sociologist by training, Haffner has an associate degree from Lindsey Wilson College, a bachelor of arts from Campbellsville University and a master of arts from Western Kentucky University. He also completed extensive doctoral work in sociology at the University of Iowa and in higher education leadership at West Virginia University.

Faith D. Maddy
Vice President for Development and Alumni Programs

Responsibilities: All activities of the development office including alumni programs; annual, major, and planned gifts; corporate, foundation, and government relations and advancement services. Maddy has 25 years of non-profit experience, 17 of them in development. She has worked for the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Washington University, Butler University, and the Center for Plant Conservation. Maddy holds a bachelor of science from Butler University and a master’s degree in college student personnel administration from Indiana University. She is active in the local chapter of the Association for Fundraising Professionals and has served as a member of the Butler University Alumni Board, Kirkwood Theatre Guild and Delta Gamma alumnae association.

James Staley
Vice President for Academic Affairs

Responsibilities: All academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including providing support for the academic deans and the five Schools and Colleges. Additionally, Staley oversees the operations of the extended campus network and manages the diverse services of academic support units, including Emerson Library and the Academic Resource Center. Staley joined Webster University in 1980 as a faculty member in the Department of Music and has served as the associate vice president for academic affairs since 1995. He continuously teaches courses each semester in music history and humanities. Staley completed his bachelor’s degree at St. Ambrose College, his master’s degree at the University of Michigan and his doctorate in historical musicology at the Catholic University of America. Staley has been a freelance musician in the St. Louis metropolitan area, and is a well-known lecturer on topics of early music. He has published performance editions of early instrumental music and has given numerous recitals and concerts throughout his career. Staley has presented workshops for the College Board on programs for adult learners, and has lectured on quality assurance initiatives in higher education. He currently is leading the preparations for the University’s reaccreditation visit with The Higher Learning Commission (HLC/NCA), North Central Association.

William J. Lynch
Faculty Senate President

Responsibilities: President of the Faculty Senate, member of the Administrative Council, Professor of Voice & Speech, Conservatory of Theatre Arts, Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts. Mr. Lynch holds a bachelor of arts in theatre from the University of Maryland, College Park and a master's of fine arts in acting from Florida State University/ Asolo Conservatory of Actor Training. Mr. Lynch joined the faculty of Webster University in 1992 and teaches in all four years of the BFA actor training curriculum. In addition to his teaching duties he has served as director or vocal coach for over 50 Conservatory productions. A member of Actor’s Equity, the union for professional actors, Mr. Lynch has performed throughout the United States. Since coming to Webster he has performed at every major company in St. Louis. He was a founding board member of the Professional Theatre Award Council, the presenters of the Annual Kevin Kline Awards, and produced the first two award ceremonies.  He is Vice-President of the board of trustees of Stages St. Louis and chairs their strategic planning committee. Mr. Lynch is the recipient of the William T. Kemper Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2004 Bill was selected by the American Council on Education to participate in the ACE Fellows Program. The Fellows Program is recognized as the premier higher education leadership program in the country and is dedicated to creating a diverse pool of leaders who are capable of achieving and maintaining excellence and equity in higher education.
