ILC 2150.02 Topics in Culture: Contemporary Latin American Women Authors
Crosslisted with WOMN 200.02 and ISTL 2550.06.
An introductory course on short stories, drama, poetry, testimonies and films by contemporary Latin American women from Spanish speaking countries and Brazil. The course focuses on textual voice, autobiography, self-image, and gender, social and political identity. Authors include Gabriela Mistral, Victoria Ocampo, Rosario Castellanos, Clarice Lispector, Nélida Piñon, Isabel Allende, Cristina Peri Rossi, Rigoberta Menchú, Sabina Berman and Diana Raznovich among others. Authors and texts are chosen to make students aware of the number and quality of women's contributions to cultural production in their respective countries. These authors and texts also encourage students to think about the varied and complex social, cultural, political and historical heritage of Latin America today. Final grade is based on attendance, class participation, oral presentation, written assignments and a term paper.
