For Communications & Journalism students
All students declaring a major within the Communications & Journalism Department (except Speech Communication Studies) complete a portfolio as part of their degree requirements.
Students majoring in Advertising and Marketing Communications, Public Relations and Media Communications must complete a portfolio review with a panel of faculty within their major after they complete the following:
• Introduction to Media Production (EPMD 1000)
• Introduction to Mass Communications (MEDC 1010)
• 9 credit hours as defined by each major
The portfolio review process enables faculty to gauge the talent, aptitude and potential of the student. It gives faculty members the opportunity to talk with students about their progress and make suggestions regarding program and career goals.
A portfolio is judged on both the quality and presentation of the material. Faculty members consider accuracy, creativity, content and technical expertise in the work presented, and enthusiasm and professionalism of delivery.
Dates for portfolio review appointments are announced each semester. Generally, portfolio reviews are held at the mid-point of each semester. Students should check with their respective department associate for specific dates and times.
Journalism majors complete a portfolio of their work as part of the requirement of Newspaper Production Workshop (JOUR 3300). Broadcast Journalism students complete a résumé and résumé tape as part of the requirements for Professional Development in Broadcast Journalism (BJRN 4700).
Students should contact their academic advisors for more specific information about portfolio review requirements.
