Webster University offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in music. Our undergraduate program offers you the chance to specialize with emphasis areas in Composition, Instrumental Performance, Jazz Studies, Keyboard (piano or organ) Performance, and Voice Performance.

The graduate program includes the choice of either a Master of Arts in Music (MA) or a Master in Music (MM).

Bachelor of Music

The BM degree is a course of study that prepares a student for a professional career in music, with a focus on pre-professional training within our Academy of Music.  You'll take courses in music theory and history, performance pedagogy and literature, and conducting.  You'll hone your talent through eight semesters of lessons on your primary instrument.  You'll perform in recitals, play in large and small ensembles, learn to compose and orchestrate pieces, and find yourself a changed musician at the end of four years of study.  You'll travel to Vienna for a term abroad in one of the musical capitols of the world.  You'll benefit from numerous guest master classes and performances on campus, as well as from musical events and activities within our urban community of Saint Louis.

Students in this program present junior and senior recitals.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education

The BM in Education degree leads to certification from the State of Missouri to teach music in grades K-12.  Two tracks are available: Choral and General Music, and Instrumental and General Music.  All music education majors take courses in music theory and history, applied music, teaching pedagogy and techniques, and teaching methods.  Some courses are taken from Webster's School of Education.  At the end of classroom studies, you'll spend a semester student teaching.  We often have a senior or two who student teach in a foreign country!

A Missouri teaching license is easily transported to other states through reciprocity agreements.

Bachelor of Arts in Music

The BA in Music program is designed for a broad understanding of the music discipline through the study of performance, music theory and music literature. This program allows a student to investigate diverse areas of music within a flexible curricular framework, and is thus the most flexible of our degree programs.  This program includes a semester in Vienna, one of the world's oldest musical capitols!

Students complete senior project appropriate to their primary emphasis area (for example: composition, piano performance, vocal performance, jazz studies, etc.). The flexibility enables students to choose a second field outside of music. Examples of second fields might include biology, creative writing, electronic media, foreign languages, international studies or psychology.

Master of Music

Graduates of the MM program are trained to further their careers in private studio teaching, private or public school music teaching, or public performance as soloists, ensemble members, conductors, or composers. The emphasis for each student’s training is determined by individual consultation with the major professor, the Director of Graduate Studies in Music, and the Committee for Graduate Studies in Music.

Master of Arts in Music

Graduates of the MA program are qualified to teach applied music in the studio or classroom, perform with or conduct ensembles, compose or arrange music, pursue doctoral studies in musicology, theory, or another field, or establish an expertise in any one or several additional areas.

The MA in Music is offered without an official area of specialization, although any one or more of several fields within music may be emphasized through elective courses that meet individual needs and career goals. The area of emphasis is determined by the student in consultation with Committee for Graduate Studies in Music and the Director of Graduate Studies in Music.

In contrast to the performance-related Master of Music, academic studies in music and related fields are emphasized in the MA in Music degree program. Performance and creative musical endeavors, however, will be central to the course of study for many students.
