Software downloaded over the Internet usually comes in a compressed format to reduce file size and therefore transfer time (it makes things faster...). On your computer, you will need the appropriate software that decompresses or extracts the software fro m the compressed "archive."
The most common compressed format is .zip on Windows machines ("zipped" files), and .sit on Macs ("stuffed" files). To get at zipped files, you need pkunzip, to get at stuffed files, you need stuffit expander. These are free versions of the decompression software. To go the other way and compress files, you need to purchase a version of the software.
STEP 1: Download the Software
When you download this software, you will need to know where it is being saved. Usually, this is in the same directory as your Netscape Navigator software (C:\NETSCAPE for Windows, in the Netscape folder for Macs).
PKUnzip 16 bit
PKUnzip 32 bit
Get it from PKWARE directly
STEP 2: Configure Netscape
You now need to let Netscape Navigator know that your new software is available.
To configure Netscape Navigator to work with your new telnet helper application, from within Navigator select the "Options" menu, and choose the "General Preferences." From the tabs along the top of the window that pops up, pick "Helpers." In the screen t hat comes up you will need to scroll through the top section until, in the Extensions column, you find the "zip" option (for Windows) or the "sit" option (for Macs).
Click on it once to highlight it, then select the "Browse" button. A dialog box will pop up that you will need to use to find the location of the application you just downloaded ("wz16v61.exe" for Windows or "StuffIt Expander" for Mac). You will likely fi nd these in the Netscape folder (Macs) or at C:\NETSCAPE (Windows). Once you find the application, select it, click the "OK" or "Open" button, and you will return to the Helper section of the General Preferences window. Click the OK button to finish your configuration.
To test your installation, you will need to download some software through Netscape, and see if it automagically downloads and then decompresses the software. If not, review the above steps to make sure everything is correctly configured.
