Acquiring and Configuring
Telnet for Netscape

Telnet access to the Eden-Webster Library online catalog, Edward, requires an external helper application for Netscape, Reflections just won't do it if you're trying to go through Netscape.

You will download the software from the URL's below, picking the appropriate one for your type of operating system (Mac or Windows). Be aware that you must have a compression utility on your system, pkunzip for windows machines, Stuffit Expander for Macs. This must be installed and configured to work with Netscape before you can go further. If this is not done, you can get instructions on this, too.

Acquiring the Telnet Helper Application:

STEP 1: Download the Software

When you download this software, you will need to know where it is being saved. Usually, this is in the same directory as your Netscape Navigator software (C:\NETSCAPE for Windows, in the Netscape folder for Macs)

Configuration help:

STEP 2: Configure Netscape

The decompression (extraction) of the software you just downloaded should have happened already, if pkunzip or stuffit expander is properly configured to work on your machine.

To configure Netscape Navigator to work with your new telnet helper application, from within Navigator select the "Options" menu, and choose the "General Preferences." From the tabs along the top of the window that pops up, pick "Applications." The screen that comes up will have Telnet as the top selection, click on the "Browse" button to the right of it.

A dialog box will pop up that you need to use to find the telnet application you just downloaded. For Windows machines, look for C:\NETSCAPE\QVTWS398.EXE, for Macintosh, look in the Netscape folder for "NCSA Telnet." If you are having trouble locating the files, try using the "Search" function in the Windows File Manager, or the "Find" feature from the Macintosh Finder. Once you have found the file, select it, click on the "OK" or "Open" button and you should see the location of the Telnet application now displayed next to the Telnet listing in the preferences box. This indicates that everything is properly configured.
