Qualifications: Doctoral degree must be in hand by June 2009. Applicants should be broadly trained in the study of world religions with significant focus on Western religions. We are seeking applicants with a particular interest in the interface of religion and politics, especially religious conflict. They should also be able to teach the diversity of American religions, and classical and contemporary theories of religion.
All faculty in our department are expected to stay current with issues in the field of religious studies. In addition, our department faculty should contribute to our undergraduate students articulating and refining their own values in the context of diverse religious options/perspectives in the world today.
We wish to expand our methodological approaches in Religious Studies towards International Relations and/or Political Science, or possibly History, Human Rights or International Studies. The successful applicant will teach occasional courses cross-listed with our History, Politics and International Relations department, probably including a graduate course. We expect our colleague to be able to teach our curriculum's recently redesigned foundations course on approaches to the study of religions, "Roots of Religion," as well as offer vibrant cross-disciplinary contributions in and outside our department (currently we have faculty trained in history of religions, anthropology, archaeology, psychology and religion in the arts/literature). A strong commitment to teaching excellence, scholarship, student advising, student research, and faculty governance is desirable. Preference will be given to candidates who provide interdisciplinary and/or international education interests.
Duties: This is a nine (9) month academic position with a teaching load of six (6) courses for the year (at least one evening course per semester) and academic advising responsibilities. Faculty members are expected to participate in department, college, and university governance activities and other university events.
