“Electric Miles: The Music of Miles Davis, 1969-1974,” presented by the Webster University Jazz Faculty Ensemble
What/Who:
The Webster University Faculty Jazz Ensemble presents “Electric Miles: The Music of Miles Davis, 1969-1974.” The concert will feature performances from the albums “In a Silent Way,” “What I Say,” “Miles Runs the Voodoo Down,” “Black Satin” and “Directions.”
The year 1969 marked the beginning of the most controversial period of Miles Davis' celebrated career. With the release of the album “In Silent Way” and with the August, 1969 recording sessions, which were released as the album “Bitches Brew” in early 1970, Davis had unequivocally signaled a new direction for his music, combining funk, R & B, jazz and rock into a potent mix. Subsequent albums over the next few years “Jack Johnson,” “Live-Evil,” “On the Corner,” “Get Up With It” and “Agharta” revealed further explorations into fusion territory. The function of instruments associated with pop music of the period demanded new musical forms. With structure determined by funky bass patterns in support of terse melodies, the real point of emphasis of this music was a rich, improvised ensemble texture and color.
The Webster University Jazz Faculty ensemble includes: Randall Holmes- trumpet, Paul DeMarinis-soprano saxophone, Steve Schenkel-guitar, Kim Portnoy-piano, Carolbeth True-piano, Jay Hungerford-electric bass and Ron Carr-guest drummer.
