Webster University’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts presents the classic American musical, “Oklahoma!” with music by Richard Rogers, lyrics and libretto by Oscar Hammerstein II and based on the play “Green Grow the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs. The production will be presented April 23-27 in the Browning Mainstage Theatre of Webster’s Loretto-Hilton Center, 130 Edgar Road. Curtain time is 8 p.m., except Sundays, which will have a 2 p.m. matinee only.  Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for senior adults and students. For ticket reservations, call the Fine Arts Hotline at 968-7128.

Set in the Oklahoma territory at the turn of the century against the backdrop of the rivalry between cattlemen and farmers, “Oklahoma!” is the story of farm girl Laurey and who will take her to the box social--the decent cowboy Curly McLain or the brooding farmhand Jud Fry. The production features classical musical numbers such as the title song "Oklahoma! “Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’” and “People Will Say We’re in Love.”

Written in 1943, “Oklahoma!” became an instant hit for Rodgers and Hammerstein. “Oklahoma!” has been honored with numerous awards including a special Pulitzer Prize, two Academy Awards, an honorary Grammy and a special Tony Award. “Oklahoma!” was important in the development of American musical theatre and a milestone in its fusion of story, song and dance.

“Oklahoma!” is directed by Lara Teeter, head of Webster’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts musical theatre program.
