Two Members of the Webster University Academic Affairs Team Receive Prestigious International Awards

Dr. Deborah Trott-Pierce, director of the Center for International Education and the Confucius Institute, was awarded a Fellowship from the East-West Center to attend the Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP) - China Institute at the University of Hawaii in May, 2008. The two-week institute on China is the first program activity of a new ASDP program, Asian Studies in Asia (ASIA). The institute is for undergraduate faculty from selected Southeast Asian Universities and American colleges and universities. The first week of the program will focus on Chinese philosophy, history and cultural traditions; the second week will cover contemporary issues concerning the environment, politics and socio-economic development. ASIA programs are designed to enhance teaching at the undergraduate level and further institutional network-building among Asian and American higher education institutions.

Grant Chapman, associate vice president, director of International programs, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for the International Education Administrators (IEA) program in Japan in June 2008. Chapman's Fulbright project is to research the Japanese educational system with an emphasis on higher education. The host organization is the Japan - U.S. Educational Commission and he will visit many different educational institutions. Fulbright recipients are among over 30,000 individuals participating in U.S. Department of State exchange programs each year. For more than forty years, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has supported programs that seek to promote mutual understanding and respect between the people of the United States andthe people of other countries. The Fulbright Scholar Program is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.
