Please note: While I will reserve books for up to 12 hours via a phone call, an order is not official until I receive an e-mail list of exactly what you want. If you were to call in an order, I will hold those phone-ordered items for 12 hours, then they will be eligible for others to buy them.

CONDITIONS OF SALES:

Buyer must pre-pay books by person check or money order or bank check. I do not accept paypal or credit cards. Buyer pays the postal/handling cost. All books will be sent by media mail unless otherwise negotiated.

Buyer will have to pay insurance if you wish to protect the books in that manner. I will take the responsibility of getting them mailed at the U.S. Post Office. After that the books are the purchaser's resonsibility.

Shipping is $3.00 for the first book and $.50 for each additional book, book rate. There will also be a 75 cent charge for each mailing for delivery confirmation. Insurance or priority shipping are extra, please ask. Delivery outside the U.S. will be arranged. A number of the art cooks are quite heavy and can't be shipped for the $3.00 normal fee. If books are heavy I will have to charge extra shipping.

There are some water marks on two blank pages from the inside cover, but no markings are on the text pages themselves, 266 pages. The publisher celebrates the even-handedness of the author.

This whole "wit and wisdom" was serialized in Harper's Magazine in 1875 before it was collected into a book. Pages 288-291 is an excerpt from the book. The magazine itself is 312 pages long and worn, but in good condition.

Overall a nice copy. His only book of poetry.

• # R130   Durham, John S    DIANE, PRIESTESS OF HAITI    Lippincotts Magazine. Philadephia, 1902. My copy is in the bound volume of Lippincotts Magazine for 1902 which contains all 12 volumes of the year. The novel by Durham is in the April edition. The front cover of the 2 3/4 inch thick volume is loose. Inside all 12 issues of text are attached and in good condition. In the 80 pages of the novel itself there is one page which has a small 1/2 inch tear at the top, otherwise in very good condition. Durham (1861-1919) was U.S. Minister to Haiti until 1893. He is an African-American writer and this novel was not published except in this issue of Lippincotts, at least I have not been able to find any other mention of it. Extremely rare.

Short tear to an inner margin with signature loose. Light wear and foxing, Good to Very Good. The bloody slave revolt culminated in independence of Haiti, St. Domingue’s successor, caused almost total destruction of Saint Doningue. . .destroved France’s most lucrative colony.. .and transformed the entire balance of power.’ Davis Slavery and Human Stogress 6, 78. “The Haitian revolution of the 179O’s terrified American and European whites and was disastrous for the North American merchants who had supplied provisions for the French West Indian expansion. But the eclipse was a godsend for British, Brazilian, Cuban, and North American planters.” Id.
  
  Abolitionists were quite anxious about “the kind of evolutionarv struggle and racial warfare that had ravaged Haiti.” Zd. at 115. Indeed, they were blamed for it. But this piece places the blame squarely on the planters, whose inhumane treatment of the slaves is deplored.
  
  This is the first edition. NUC lists a 39—page edition republished in Philadelphia later in 1792. Neither Sabin nor Blockson cites this edition.

  Pierre Toussaint has been beatified by the Roman Catholic Church. His case for sainthood is in process. This is the earliest known publication on this potential Haitian saint. Pierre Toussaint was born in San Domingue in 1766 and died in New York in 1853. This book was published the year after his death. There is a facsimile of his signature under a photograph or lithorgraph of Toussaint. The book is in decent condition. On the title page there is a small triangle missing which is in a place where there was no text. Otherwise the book is fully intact, if worn.

Revealing and fascinating topics such as: "native soldiers, a black lady's salutation, Negro laziness, fishing in the lagoon, hiring a mule, in the streets, shops and houses, English Methodist chapel, story of Haytian cannibalism, the Gros Morne, President Geffard, long section on Port-au-Prince including a visit to the National Palace. Fascinating reading. The sort of history of the period one can't get from standard texts.

• # R14   St. John, Sir Spencer    HAYTI OR THE BLACK REPUBLIC     (1889). . New York, Scribner and Welford. Sir Spencer was the British ambassador to Haiti and didn't like it at all. His book was one of the first to claim cannibalism in Voodoo and human sacrifice. Later on J.N. Leger replied to that charge in his book (also in this list) HAITI: HER HISTORY AND DETRACTORS. He had Sir Spencer St. John in mind as one of the key detractors. The book is 389 pages long and in good condition.

• # R107    HISTORY, LITERATURE &C. OF HAYTI     Unsigned article in Niles' Weekly Register, Baltimore, MD, 1820. This 187 year old newspaper which I have in my library has a rather ironic set of stories. Early in the paper is a story entitled: HISTORY, LITRATURE, &c. OF HAYTI. This long story was reprinted from "The British Review from March 1820." The irony is that this story celebrates the rule of both Christophe in the north and Boyer in the south and shows what a marvelous job each is doing and how, while technically at war, they do a decent job of getting along. Then, later in the paper is a another significant report of the uprising against Christophe which began at St. Marc and led to his suicide and the unification of Hayti. However, in this story, just pages later in the same newspaper, Christophe has become this horrible tyrrant and murderer. The issue isn't so much which picture of Christophe is the correct one. Rather, it is the irony that the editors of the Baltimore paper, Niles' Weekly Reader, either didn't notice the contradictory portraits of Christophe or they didn't care. No matter the editorical position, or lack of same, this is an extradinarily vivid picture of the Haiti in the last days of the division into the Kindom of the north and the Republic of the south. It is a bit skimpy in details of the revolution and downfall of of Christophe.

Admittedly Paquin writes in exile from New York, sort of using this book as a platform to become next emperor of Haiti, but he deals in a fascinating way with the class and color issue. Also, his was one of the first full lists of presidents, their turms of office and manner of going out of office which I had seen. This used to be for sale EVERYWHERE in Haiti, and each visit I'd bring back 10-15 copies and sell them quickly. Now it has become very scarce and I haven't seen one for sale in Haiti in more than 10 years. It was published in 1983.
  I've never seen a hard bound of this one, it's a bright yellow paper back.
