Who I am, in 50 words or less

I am professor and chair in the Department of Communications and Journalism at Webster University. I hold a BS in Communications from Northwestern University (1975) and an MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College (1991). For 2008, I received the William T. Kemper Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as an Emerson Award for teaching.

During the Fall 2009 semester, I will be on sabbatical, working on several writing projects.

My fiction has appeared in

Twice my work has been cited among the distinguished stories in Best American Short Stories, in 1982 and 1989. Another of my stories was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2003, and an excerpt from my novel-in-progress, A Saint in the Family, received second prize in the 2004 Santa Fe Writers Project.
